Whether you’re a player or an observer, it feels like there’s no way to avoid the existence Pokemon Go.
While there are still a few kinks to be ironed out, hordes of eager Pokemon trainers, young and old, have been showing the game lots of love. Read on for some tips on how to be the very best, like no one ever was.
Catch more Pokemon
It’s great to walk around for hours waiting to encounter wild Pokemon, but why not have Pokemon come to you?
To lure Pokemon to you, you can use either a Lure Model or an Incense--or both together. Both increase your chances of encountering Pokemon even if you don’t walk around and both items’ effects last for 30 minutes each. An Incense can be used anywhere at any time (you’ll see pink clouds start circling you to show it’s working), but a Lure Module can only be placed on a PokeStop (pink petals will appear to indicate its effect). Keep in mind that the effects of Incense affect only you, but everyone in the vicinity can reap the benefits of a Lure Module!
If you find yourself too far from some Pokemons you can't reach. You can
use a pokedrone!
Level up faster
It can be a little slow to level up in the beginning, especially if you’re eager to hit level 5 and choose your team. You gain experience for basic actions such as catching and evolving Pokemon, as well as hatching eggs.
Pidgeys are the most commonly encountered Pokemon with the lowest required number of candies to evolve (just 12 Pidgey candies), so if you just keep evolving Pidgeys, you’ll level up in no time.
Additionally, if you are at a location with a Lure Module, double your chances of a Pokemon encounter with an Incense, and then double the experience points you gain for the next 30 minutes by using a Lucky Egg.
Level up better
The higher the Pokemon’s CP (combat points) are before you evolve it, the higher the evolved form’s CP will be.
The CP of your Pokemon are also directly related to your own level, so the boost in CP that your Pokemon receive during evolutions will increase if you’re at a higher level yourself. If you can wait, wait until you’re at least level 10 or higher to evolve your Pokemon.
Battery preservation
Pokemon Go can drain a lot of battery and you can’t go on adventures if you’re tethered to an electrical outlet. Here are a few tips to elongate your daily Pokemon experience:
Carry an extra battery so you can swap out a fresh one when you’re running low for an instant 100% battery;
Use an external battery case that charges your phone as you go;
Use an external power bank so you can charge while travelling;
Turn off AR (augmented reality). While this detracts a little from the novelty of the game, you’ll be able to play for longer;
Download offline maps for Google Maps. This tip has not yet been verified, but some have reported that because the game draws on Google Maps data, if you have your local areas downloaded for offline use, the game will use less data as well as battery.
Game glitches
If your game lags or freezes at any moment, you can always close it and restart it. Unfortunately, sometimes the game will glitch at a vital moment. For those crucial times, pay close attention to the little white spinning Pokeball at the top left corner of your screen. If it’s present and spinning, don’t close your game yet! Wait until it disappears before you restart the game and you will have a higher chance of having your last interactions saved.
Join a community
There’s so many people out there who love Pokemon as much as you do, so see if you can join a local community. Benefits include:
Sharing current Share Module locations
Sharing the appearance of rarer Pokemon
Get-togethers so you don’t have to adventure alone
Making new friends!
Safety
Many people go adventuring at night, but unfortunately, this is not always the safest way to catch Pokemon. If you’re going to go out at night, make sure you go out in pairs, are always aware of your surroundings, and let someone know where you’re going.
There’s been news reports of thieves or robbers using Lure Modules on Pokestops in secluded locations to lure unsuspecting Pokemon trainers to them. Those poor trainers end up finding themselves robbed or attacked with no way of seeking help. Make sure you think twice about whether the Pokemon is worth any unnecessary trouble before heading toward any potentially suspicious lures.
Don’t be a jerk; be aware of your surroundings
This one is simple and easy--it’s even on the loading screen of the game. When you’re playing, whether you’re on the street or in a hallway, make sure you’re aware of what (and who) is around you. Keep your head up and eyes forward when you’re mobile; if your phone notifies you of a wild Pokemon nearby, step to the side to catch it. Don’t stop where you are if you’re in the middle of a walking path, especially if you’re on the road or in a parking lot!
